NFL Football Betting Roots & ChangesNFL football betting has become one of the biggest draws and moneymakers in all of Las Vegas. In addition, pro football wagering has been at the forefront of the online sportsbook explosion that has revolutionized sports betting as we now know it. There was a time, not all that long ago, however, when NFL betting was a sideshow and something that the casino resorts wanted nothing to do with. “Back in the day” NFL football betting was considered something dirty and for unsophisticated folks and lacked the glamour of traditional table games such as craps, roulette, black jack or baccarat. While NFL football betting was legal in Las Vegas, it took place in dingy little street corner betting parlors, baring little resemblance to the opulent and customer oriented sportsbooks of today. In the 1960’s NFL gamblers would watch their action via ticker as the sportsbook clerks would update chalkboards, without the cable or Direct TV television feeds that we take for granted today. As far as hard core handicapping information went in those days, gamblers had to rely on a few tout sheets and their local newspapers for brief wire service stories with very little detailed information available as there was no cable television, let alone 24-hour sports stations nor any internet access. In depth coverage was reserved for publications such as the “Sporting News” but even that was rather scant when compared to what a gambler is offered today. Eventually, however, some of the resort hotel casinos decided to create their own sportsbooks in order to keep their guests and customers from straying away for action at the little sportsbooks down the street. The experiment of sportsbooks quickly grew into design as the smarter resorts began building large sportsbooks with comfortable viewing rooms where gamblers could watch games on TV and be enticed to hang around and bet more money as the betting boards were displayed prominently around the televisions, (just like today). This helped take NFL football betting to the next level as such accommodations increased its popularity. Casino managers were thrilled with the crowds that NFL football betting drew as it helped create a spillover affect into other areas of their properties. Growth continued as pro football games began being shown on cable and the demand for NFL football betting action increased as a result. A spillover effect was the information available to gamblers thanks to all sports television channels, which further whetted the NFL bettor’s appetite. With the explosion of the information age and internet, NFL football betting has become the most popular form of all sports gambling. Gamblers have gone from those wire service clips to being able to read every story written about all NFL teams and the explosion of sports radio and television has simply added not only to the information available but also the “buzz” about pro football betting. NFL football betting was once considered something near criminal. But today it has grown into one of the most respected forms of entertainment and wagering available and draws better crowds, enthusiasm, and money than the tables do on a Sunday! © 2010 - All Rights Reserved
