2005 Boise State Broncos Handicapping Review

By Tom Wilkinson

The Boise State Broncos have gone from something of a quiet sleeper team on many sports bettors’ lists of football picks to something of a mainstay and serious candidate to make weekly football picks lists for many of the less sophisticated sports bettors. Boise State’s success story really began as far back as 1999 when they went 9-3 straight up and 7-3 against the odds. They came right back in 2000 to go 9-2 straight up and 7-2 against the sports betting line. Still a secret in 2001, the Broncos went 8-4 both straight up and against the odds. Still, despite this incredible run and profit margin, the Broncos received scant attention from sports betting bloggers heading into the 2002 season. Soon, the secret would be out, however.

Incredibly enough Boise State dropped their first two games against the odds in 2002, seemingly on the way to a long overdue sports handicapping market correction. But just as a correction seemed eminent, the Broncos went on a tear and ripped off eight consecutive wins and covers against the odds. By November, online sports betting blogs were touting Boise State as a team to have at the top of one’s lists of football picks. They completed 2002 with a record of 12-1 straight up and 10-3 against the odds and a secret no more. A sports handicapping market correction definitely began to take place in 2003 as Boise dropped four of its first five games against the pointspread. As sports betting bloggers moaned that Boise’s value was shot the Broncos went on to cover six of their next seven games against the odds to finish 13-1 straight up and 7-6 against the pointspread. They entered 2004 as a legitimate contender to be on many “A” lists of football picks.

Boise started off 2004 as if they would remain the cash cow that they have been since 1999 with two convincing covers. sports betting bloggers began to rave about the Broncos again but a sports handicapping market correction of four straight failures against the odds took place. Again, as was the case in 2003 it appeared as if Boise State lost its value and was overpriced but just as doubts set in the Broncos beat the sports betting odds in five of their final six games to finish 11-1 straight up and 7-5 against the pointspread.

Boise State has been a consistently profitable team since 1999, although just barely so in 2003 and 2004 as the “word” is definitely out amongst the general sports betting public, decreasing the Broncos’ value.
